World Autism Awareness Day

For some strange reasons, autism has not been well understood by people for many years now. In medical terms it can be referred to as a disability that affects development within three years of a child’s life. It is a neurological disorder wherein the affected individual is faced with severe and all-encompassing impairment in quite a few areas of maturity.

Autism is a psychiatric disorder that has different effects on different individuals. So much so that two people diagnosed in a similar capacity are likely to act very differently from each other apart from having dissimilar capabilities.

Parents need to be attentive towards their child’s communication skills and interaction abilities especially in the first three years. Though there are no specific guidelines to detect autism, a layperson should feel concern if the child shows language inadequacy, strange behaviour (like recurring acts, unreasonable affection for some things) or any type of intellectual insufficiency.  Parents need not panic on discovering that their child is autistic. An early diagnosis helps understand the pattern of the disorder and goes a long way in benefitting a child right through his/her life. Autism can be dealt with by sending affected children to special schools and specialized intervention programs.

There is no doubt that living with autism is a complex and emotional matter. Families need to learn how to deal with autism and continue to live an ordinary life rather than be stressed out. Parents need to educate themselves better by keeping in mind a child’s requirements. Physicians and pediatricians will recommend several tests, medication and therapies. These are all very important and allow the child to live a good life and fight the disorder from the point of detection. Regular tests determine whether an autistic person’s condition has worsened or become better. These tests help understand the thought an autistic individual has and the mode of expression they are comfortable with. The child has to undergo these sessions and therapies in the presence of the parents so that they too get first hand counselling.

It is important to realize that autism is an absolute condition and does not have any guaranteed and miraculous cure. Once this has been accepted, then living with autism may become a little simpler. Have hope, and give strength and care to the child.

Here are 3 things to keep in mind when it comes to food for autistic kids. However always consult your paedriatition or doctor before making any changes in your child’s diet.

Increase Omega 3’s – Omega3’s are a nutrient that you should go out of your way to include in an Autistic persons diet. These super important good fats work wonders for the brain and boost the working of the nervous system.

Include foods that ease digestion

People affected with autism have to often rely on antibiotics to ease the symptoms of the condition. The strong antibiotics damage the inner stomach lining affecting the absorption of nutrients from food and kill some of the good bacteria from the gut which causes bowel irregularities and problems in digestion. High fibre foods that aid digestion are highly recommended.

Gluten, sugar and dairy sensitivity

Several researches and personal observations from parents of autistic children and those suffering from ASD’s have showed an improvement in the symptoms when their diet excluded gluten, sugar and dairy. You can replace gluten and casein with healthier more nutritious alternatives like vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, whole grains, pulses and legumes, brown rice and lean meat.
