World Autism Awareness Day: Embracing the differently-abled!

Today is World Autism Day, and what better day to learn about Autism and its repercussions on hundreds of children every single day. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that limits one’s mental abilities to carry out normal everyday functions.

Insights and challenges

Autism is known as a spectrum disorder, which means the severity and type of symptoms are different for every affected person. This disorder hampers the day-to-day activities and development of the affected individual – causing difficulty in learning, especially languages as well as creates a hurdle in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactive skills along with presence of unusual behavioural patterns like hand flapping, biting, etc.

In India, one in every 100 children suffers from Autism. Most of the times it goes unnoticed by parents for years altogether. Unfortunately, it’s uncurable, but through therapy and treatment, people with this condition can live a normal life, just like the rest of us. All they need is a little love, support and guidance for having a happy and confident future ahead.

Autistics can lead an independent life with pride and dignity if they’re given enough opportunities they truly deserve. This is where our responsibility lies as a citizen or an organisation to support the people suffering from Autism. In addition, paving a way for granting employment avenues to back them in carrying out normal lives. There are support organisations too that help autistics deal with everyday challenges, prepare them for the world and help them live a better life.

Charity begins at home!
