Into the world of spaghetti

I’m sure many of you might be inquisitive about the first historical traces of spaghetti. Surprisingly, it was the Arabs who invented this dish eons ago, which was long before it became a part of Italy’s staple. It was indeed a distinct sight to witness dry noodles laid at the local street stores in 5th century A.D. As this gained popularity, they started being available in varieties too. Did you know that according to the International Pasta Organization, there are more than 600 different shapes of pasta in the world? And most pasta is prepared using wheat products mixed along with water. Other types include the ones made using rice, barley, corn and beans.

 

You will also be amazed to know that Italians never use a spoon and fork to eat spaghetti, and this concept is a very American habit. The steady flow of Italian immigrants to the US brought spaghetti as an offering in the restaurants in the early 19th century. During this time, a dusting of parmesan cheese was considered as one of the most popular spaghetti toppings, and for a long time, cheese and black pepper were the only condiments used with spaghetti. Additionally, vegetables were not only used to top the spaghetti but were also used to colour and flavour the actual pasta. Like tomato could make a red pasta, pumpkin turned it orange and spinach would add a green hue to it. Salivating already? Binge on this version of a desi style pasta.

Have you ever wondered why a bowl of spaghetti results in instant joy?
