The cuisine of The United States is a rich amalgamation of peoples, religions and cultures thanks to the immigrants from different parts of the world.  They brought with them their local ingredients as well as cooking styles with them.  Yet amidst all these varieties Chinese and Italian cuisines dominate.  
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Americans developed a number of new foods.  What characterised the American cuisine is the adaptation of a fusion of multiple ethnic cooking styles. During this period food production and presentation became more industrialised.

Ingredients for Walnut Raisin Cookies Recipe

  • Walnuts toasted and chopped 80 grams

  • Raisins 30 grams

  • Refined flour (maida) 200 grams

  • Castor sugar (caster sugar) 110 grams

  • Butter diced 200 grams

  • Salt a pinch

  • Vanilla essence a few drops

  • Egg wash as required

Method

Step 1

Preheat oven at 175°C. Cream together sugar and butter in cake batter mixer at a low speed till ingredients are well combined. Increase the speed and blend till the mixture is light and fluffy. Add salt and vanilla essence and blend for 4-5 minutes on medium speed.

Step 2

Add flour in batches and fold in using a spatula. Combine till all the flour is mixed with the butter-sugar mixture.Add raisins and walnuts and mix well.

Step 3

Place a piece of butter paper on a worktop and put a portion of the dough on it. Roll into a cylinder. Refrigerate for 2 hours.Brush the cookie dough cylinder with an egg wash and sprinkle sugar on it. Roll so that the dough is coated with the sugar.

Step 4

Cut the cylinder into medium thick roundels. These are the cookies. Place a butter paper on a baking tray and put the cookies on it. Spread egg wash on cookies. Put the baking tray in preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat, cool and serve.
