Tandoor and more

Tandoor is something which we Indians love from the very core of our hearts. And, FYI, it has not gained popularity just a few years ago; it takes us back to 5000 years ago during the Harrapan Civilisation of ancient India. Obviously, we are not the only ones to be using this culinary beauty, Western and Central Asia loves it too. But, some people think ’tandoor’ is just a dish! No, it’s actually a cooking method which has been used to craft so many vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Guru Nanak Dev ji – the founder of Sikh religion, for bringing and encouraging the use of ’tandoor’ in our lives. He introduced “sanjha chulha” which means a ‘common oven’ to cook with the thought of creating equality amongst people. This helped to remove casteism and inequalities in India, along with a mode of recreation for women who used to chit-chat and gossip around the “sanjha chulha.”

Earlier ‘tandoors’ were set and then fired by woods, or people used clay pots or metal ovens. They also used a charcoal or wood that would slow burn the ‘tandoor.’ Nowadays, with the advancement in technology, people have started using electric ovens, gas stoves and other appliances. But, if you ask a food enthusiast, he/she would still go for the traditional method of ‘tandoor’ cooking.
