Super healthy, cabbage goes a long way back. In ancient times, the Greeks treated it as a special food for its many medicinal properties. There are tales about raw cabbage juice being a standard treatment for a nasty hangover! Salads, dals, sabzis, pickles and even raitas, cabbage does full justice to each preparation. Shop for the ones that have a crisp, shiny look to it.

Ingredients for Chana dal Cabbage Recipe

  • Cabbage shredded 1 medium

  • Split Bengal gram (chana dal) 1 cup

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Curry leaves 8

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Ginger chopped 1 inch piece

  • Garlic chopped 3 cloves

  • Onion finely chopped 1 medium

  • Salt to taste

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Tomato finely chopped 1 medium

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 2 tablespoons

Method

Step 1

Pressure cook the chana dal with 1 cup water till three whistles. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

In a non stick pan, heat oil, add curry leaves, mustard seeds, ginger, garlic and onions. Saute well till soft. Add cabbage and toss well. Add salt and ½ cup water.

Step 3

Cover and cook on low heat till done.Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, tomatoes and chana dal. Cook for five minutes.Add coriander leaves and serve hot.
