Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Shakkarkandi Matar Masala Recipe

  • Sweet potatoes (shakkerkand) , scrubbed clean and cut into cubes 4 medium

  • Green peas (matar) 1/4 cup

  • Sunflower oil 4 tablespoons

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Ginger , finely chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Green chillies, , finely chopped 2-3

  • Coriander powder 1 1/2 tablespoons

  • Cumin powder 1 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Dried mango powder (amchur) 1 1/2 teaspoons

  • Garam masala powder 1 teaspoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander sprigs 10-12 + to garnish

  • Fresh red chilli to garnish


Step 1

Heat sunflower oil in a non-stick pan, add cumin seeds, ginger and green chillies, stir and sauté till fragrant.

Step 2

Add sweet potatoes, toss and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Add coriander powder, cumin powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, dried mango powder, garam masala powder and salt, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add green peas and mix. Add water as required, cover and cook for 6-8 minutes.

Step 5

Finely chop coriander leaves, add to the pan and mix.

Step 6

Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprigs and red chilli and serve hot.
