Pumpkin Idli

Idli is one of the most popular South Indian snack which is now enjoyed the world over. Though traditional idli batter is a mixture of ground urad dal and rice of rawa. However idlis can be made in various other combination. Here goodness of pumpkin makes this idli soft and fluffy. A different and delicious savoury breakfast dish!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup finely grated pumpkin 
  • 1 cup semolina (rawa)
  • 1 tablespoon split Bengal gram (chana dal)
  • 2-3 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • 2 tablespoons scraped fresh coconut
  • 1½ teaspoons cumin seeds
  • Coarsely crushed black peppercorns to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1½ teaspoons fruit salt
  • Coconut chutney to serve

Method

  1. Take semolina in a large bowl, add water and wash it for 1-2 times. Add sufficient water and set aside to soak for 1 hour.
  2. Take split Bengal gram in another bowl, add water and wash for 1-2 times. Add sufficient water and set aside to soak for 1 hour. Then drain.
  3. Transfer the soaked semolina, soaked split Bengal gram in another large bowl. Add grated pumpkin, green chillies, coriander leaves, coconut, cumin seeds, coarsely crushed black peppercorns and salt and mix till well combined. Sprinkle fruit salt and mix well.
  4. Heat sufficient water in a steamer. 
  5. Pour the batter into each dent of idli mould and place it in the steamer. Cover the steamer and steam for 10-15 minutes. 
  6. De-mould the idlis and serve hot with coconut chutney.
