Why is it that when you are stuck at “what should we cook today” the answer is always “make some aloo!” Potatoes are like this…extremely popular and have multipurpose usage.

And did you always think that eating a potato will make you fat?
Well, don’t – it is a surprising source of vitamin C and provides useful amounts of starch, thiamine and niacin and around a hundred grams will provide about eighty calories.

Ingredients for Aloo Dahiwale Recipe

  • Potatoes boiled, peeled and cut into ½-inch cubes 4 medium

  • Yogurt whisked 4 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder ¼ teaspoon

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida a pinch

  • Green chillies broken into three pieces 3

  • Sugar a pinch

  • Lemon juice 1 tablespoon

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 4 tablespoons


Step 1

Put potatoes in a bowl, add salt, chilli powder and turmeric powder and mix well. Set aside for four to five minutes.

Step 2

Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add cumin seeds and when they begin to change colour, add asafoetida and green chillies and sauté for one minute.

Step 3

Add potatoes and mix. Add two cups of water and mix. Add sugar, salt and lemon juice and mix. Cover and simmer for five to six minutes.

Step 4

Set aside to cool slightly. Add yogurt and mix.

Step 5

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
