Indian cuisine comprises of a number of regional cuisines.  The diversity in soil type, climate, culture, ethnic group and occupations, these cuisines differ from each other mainly due to the use of locally available spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits. Indian food is also influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. 
Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Chocolate Naankhatai Recipe

  • Cocoa powder 2 tablespoons

  • Refined flour 1 cup

  • Gram flour 1/2 cup

  • Baking powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Baking soda 1/4 teaspoon

  • Instant coffee powder 1 teaspoon

  • Almond meal 2 tablespoons

  • Powdered sugar 1 cup

  • Salt a pinch

  • Ghee 1/2 cup

  • Chocolate syrup for drizzling


Step 1

Preheat the oven to 160˚C.

Step 2

Sift together refined flour, gram flour, baking powder, baking soda, coffee powder, cocoa powder and almond meal into a bowl. Add powdered sugar and mix well. Add salt and mix well.

Step 3

Add ghee and mix well to form medium soft dough.

Step 4

Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Divide the dough into equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and flatten it slightly and keep on the lined tray. Make a small dent in centre of each cookie. If the cookies have a cracked surface, add a little more ghee to the dough and mix well.

Step 5

Keep the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes. Bring the tray out of the oven and let the cookies cool down.

Step 6

Drizzle chocolate syrup on a serving platter and arrange the nankhatais over it and serve.
