Ingredients list for Toi Kadhi

  • 1 cup Split pigeon pea (toor dal/arhar dal) soaked for 20 minutes and drained
  • a pinch Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp +
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Oil
  • 6-8 Garlic cloves sliced
  • 1 medium Tomato finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon Tamarind paste

Method

  1. Pressure cook pigeon pea in sufficient water alongwith a pinch turmeric powder and salt for 12-15 minutes or for 3 whistles. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add garlic and sauté till they turn golden.
  3. Add tomato and cook till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  4. Add cumin powder, ¼ tsp turmeric powder, red chilli powder, crushed peppercorns and salt. Mix well.
  5. Add the cooked dal and stir to mix. Add tamarind paste and mix well.
  6. Add 1 cup water, stir to mix and bring it to a boil.
  7. Serve hot.
