And did you always think that eating a potato will make you fat?
Well, don’t – it is a surprising source of vitamin C and provides useful amounts of starch, thiamine and niacin and around a hundred grams will provide about eighty calories.

Ingredients for Urulai Kizhangu Podimas Recipe

  • Potatoes boiled and peeled 4 medium

  • Curry leaves 6-8

  • Green chillies 2-3

  • Ginger 1 inch piece

  • Mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon

  • Split black gram skinless (dhuli urad dal) 1/2 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida a pinch

  • Dried red chillies broken 1-2

  • Lemon juice 1 teaspoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 2 tablespoons

  • Oil 4-6 tablespoons

  • Scraped coconut 2 tablespoons


Step 1

Heat oil in a non stick pan. Finely chop green chillies and ginger. Add mustard seeds to the oil.

Step 2

When they splutter, add dhuli urad dal, asafoetida and red chillies and saute.

Step 3

Add ginger and green chillies and saute.

Step 4

Mash potatoes and add to the pan and mix well. Add 3-4 tbsps water and mix.

Step 5

Add lemon juice and mix. Add salt, coriander leaves, curry leaves and mix.

Step 6

Cook for some time. Add coconut and mix. Serve hot.
