The Maharashtrian hospitality is legendary. The cuisine has subtle variety and strong flavours and varies from region to region. In ancient times in the more affluent homes, feasts often started at mid-day and ended when the sun set! Ingredients for Vala Che Bhirde Recipe

  • Val Sprouted 250 grams

  • Coconut Milk 3 1/2 tablespoons

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida 1/2 teaspoon

  • Onion 1 large

  • Red chilli powder (deghi mirch) 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Fresh coconut scraped 3 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste

  • Jaggery (gur) 1 teaspoon


Step 1

Remove the skins of the sprouted val. Peel and chop the onion. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, when they crackle remove from heat.

Step 2

Add chopped onion, asafoetida, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and beat with a whisk till frothy.

Step 3

Add val, coconut milk and cook on low heat till val is cooked. Add grated coconut and jaggery. Stir for a minute till it dissolves.

Step 4

Serve hot with rice or ghavne.
