  • Syrup

  • Sugar 1 3/4 cup

  • Lemon juice 2 teaspoons

  • Honey 8 tablespoons

Method

Step 1

Preheat oven at 177ºC. Grease a 9 X 13 baking tin with some butter.

Step 2

Cut the phyllo sheets so they fit in the tin. Cover with a damp cloth to keep them from drying out.

Step 3

Grind together the walnuts, sugar and cardamom seeds to a coarse mixture. Transfer in a bowl and set aside.

Step 4

Place a phyllo sheet in the tin. Brush with butter. Repeat 7 more times until it is 8 sheets thick, each sheet being brushed with butter. Cut the phyllo sheet in 2”X2” inch square.

Step 5

Add a spoonful of the walnut mixture on it, pick up the four sides of the sheet and attach at one place. Place the tin in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Step 6

To make the syrup, heat 300 ml water in a non-stick pan. Add sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and honey, mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 7 minutes or till slightly thick. Discard the cinnamon and set aside to cool.

Step 7

Drizzle the syrup over the baklava, garnish with crushed walnuts and serve.
