Indian food is also influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. 
Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Chatpata Karela Recipe

  • Bitter Gourd 2

  • Dried Indian Gooseberry 6-8 piece

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Oil to deep fry

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Garam masala powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Dried mango powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Chaat masala 1/2 teaspoon

  • Gram flour (besan) 2 tablespoons

  • Rice flour 2 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Finely slice the bitter gourds into roundels and put into a bowl.

Step 2

Add salt and turmeric powder, mix and keep aside for 4-5 minutes.

Step 3

Heat sufficient oil in a kadai. Wash the marinated karela thoroughly with water, squeeze out all the water and put into another bowl.

Step 4

Add red chilli powder, garam masala powder, salt, amchur and ¼ tsp chaat masala and mix well.

Step 5

Add gram flour and rice flour and mix well. Deep fry bitter gourd slices in the hot oil till crisp.

Step 6

Finely slice amla pieces. Drain the fried bitter gourd slices on absorbent paper.

Step 7

Add remaining chaat masala and amla and mix well. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve immediately.
