Matar Samosa

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh green peas
  • 150 grams ready-made samosa dough, cut into strips
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1-2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1½ teaspoons garam masala powder
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Green chutney to serve
  • Sweet tamarind chutney to serve 
  • Chopped coriander for garnish

Method

  1. Heat ghee in a non-stick pan; add cumin seeds, sauté till the colour changes. Add green chillies, ginger and sauté well. 
  2. Add onion, sauté well and cook till translucent. Add fresh green peas, 3-4 tablespoons water and mix well. Add salt, garam masala powder, and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes or till the green peas are cooked.
  3. Mash the cooked mixture with a masher and cook for a minute. Take it off the heat and set aside to cool.
  4. Seal the edges of a samosa strip using a little water and stuff it with a portion of the prepared mixture and seal the top with a little more water to shape it like a samosa. Make more and set aside.
  5. Heat sufficient oil in a non-stick pan, deep fry the samosas till golden brown and crisp. Drain on an absorbent paper.
  6. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot along with green chutney and sweet tamarind chutney.
