Available in various types, shapes and sizes, these edible fungi (purely vegetarian!) are a great way to glam-up your dishes. Talking about the types, there are – button, enoki, morel, oyster, shiitake, porcini, chanterelle and portabella. Buy the ones with a firm texture and even colour with tightly-closed caps. If the gills are showing, it is an indication of age and they are probably past their prime.

Ingredients for Mushroom Pepper Fry Recipe

  • Button mushrooms quartered 200 grams

  • Yellow bell pepper finely chopped 1/2 medium

  • Oil 1 tablespoon

  • Green chillies finely chopped 2

  • Onions quartered 2 medium

  • Sugar 1/2 teaspoon

  • Garam masala powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Roasted cumin powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Dark soy sauce 1 tablespoon

  • Fresh coriander leaves finely chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Ginger juliennes for garnishing


Step 1

Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add green chillies and sauté till translucent.

Step 2

Add bell pepper and sauté on high heat.

Step 3

Add sugar and mix well.

Step 4

Add mushrooms, garam masala powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder and sauté for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5

Add salt and soy sauce and mix well.

Step 6

Add coriander and mix well.

Step 7

Serve hot garnished with ginger juliennes.
