The cuisine of The United States is a rich amalgamation of peoples, religions and cultures thanks to the immigrants from different parts of the world.  They brought with them their local ingredients as well as cooking styles with them.  Yet amidst all these varieties Chinese and Italian cuisines dominate.  
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Americans developed a number of new foods.  What characterised the American cuisine is the adaptation of a fusion of multiple ethnic cooking styles. During this period food production and presentation became more industrialised.

Ingredients for Thousand Island Dressing Recipe

  • Mayonnaise 3 tablespoons

  • Garlic , finely chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Tomato ketchup 2 tablespoons

  • White onion , finely chopped 2 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper powder to taste

  • Tabasco a few drops

  • Iceberg lettuce leaves 8-16

  • Romaine lettuce leaves 4-8

  • Egg , hard boiled and quartered vertically 1

  • Prawns , blanched 8

  • Parsley sprigs a few to garnish


Step 1

To prepare thousand island dressing, take mayonnaise in a bowl, add garlic, tomato ketchup, white onions, salt, black pepper powder and Tabasco sauce and mix well.

Step 2

Put 1-2 iceberg lettuce leaves in each stemmed glass, top it with 1-2 romaine lettuce leaves and 1-2 iceberg lettuce leaves. Top with the 1-2 tablespoons dressing and a boiled egg quarter. Skew 2 prawns on toothpicks and place them in the glass. Serve immediately.

Step 3

Transfer the remaining dressing into a bottle and garnish with a parsley sprig.
