Ingredients list for Vatlya Dalicha Zunka

  • 1 1/4 cups Split Bengal gram (chana dal) , soaked for 3-4 hours and drained
  • 2 medium Onions
  • 2 teaspoons Cumin seeds
  • 1 Green chilli
  • 2-3 tablespoons Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • a pinch Asafoetida
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh coriander leaves , chopped

Method

  1. Roughly chop 1 onion and finely chop the other.
  2. Transfer the split Bengal gram into a blender jar. Add roughly chopped onion, half the cumin seeds, green chilli and ¼ cup water and grind coarsely.
  3. Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add mustard seeds and once they start to splutter, add the remaining cumin seeds and asafoetida and mix.
  4. Add finely chopped onion and sauté till golden brown. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt and mix well.
  5. Add the ground mixture and mix well. Cover and cook, on low heat, for 12-15 minutes or till the gram is fully cooked. Make sure you mix at regular intervals.
  6. Sprinkle coriander leaves and mix well. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
