Ingredients 

  • 1 1/2 cups split skinless green gram (dhuli moong dal), soaked for 2 hours
  • 250 grams French Beans, cut into 1/4 inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped ginger 
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Thin strips of ginger for garnishing
  • Fresh coriander sprig for garnishing

Method

  1. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Slice onion and add to the pan and sauté till onion turns translucent.
  3. Add split green gram along with the water in which it was soaked and mix well. Cover and cook for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add turmeric powder and salt and mix well. Add ¼ cup water and mix well. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add French beans and mix well. Add ginger and mix. Cover and continue to cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Slit the green chillies and add to the pan. Add 2-3 tbsps water and mix. Cover and cook on low heat till the green gram and beans are just done. Take care not to overcook.
  6. Switch off the heat, uncover the pan, add lemon juice and garam masala powder and mix well.
  7. Transfer into a serving platter, garnish with ginger strips and serve hot.
