Ingredients list for Tomato Chaatni

  • 8 medium Tomatoes chopped
  • 8-10 Seedless dates
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds (methi dana)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fennel seeds (saunf)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Onion seeds (kalonji)
  • 2 Dried red chillies broken
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Tamarind pulp

Method

  1. Heat 1 cup water in a non-stick pan, add sugar and cook to make a thin syrup.
  2. Heat oil in a deep non stick pan, add ¼ tsp each of cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds, fennel seeds and onion seeds and sauté till fragrant.
  3. Dry roast all the remaining seeds till fragrant.
    Add tomatoes to the deep pan and stir.
  4. Add broken red chillies and mix.
    Cover and cook for some time.
  5. Put the roasted spices in a mortar and pound to a coarse powder.
    Add salt to tomatoes and mix.
  6. Add the sugar syrup and mix.
    Chop dates and add and mix well.
    Cook till tomatoes are soft.
    Add tamarind pulp and mix and cook till the tomatoes are completely mashed and the chutney thick.
    Transfer into a serving bowl, sprinkle the spice powder and serve.
