Yes, though other meats being more common, biryani eaters all over the world can easily swear by mutton. And not just biryanis, curries, bakes and all other preparations with this wonderful meat are always special. Did you know, unlike other dishes, a day-old mutton prep will always be all the more tastier on the palate! Try it the next time you plan on to take on this meat.

Ingredients for Goan Mutton Curry Recipe

  • Mutton 1 1/2 inch pieces on the bone 750 grams

  • Yogurt 1/4 cup

  • Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon

  • Onions 2 large

  • Oil 3 tablespoons

  • Ginger crushed 1 1/2 inch pieces

  • Garlic crushed 6 cloves

  • Coriander powder 1 teaspoon

  • Cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon

  • Clove powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Black pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Desiccated coconut 2 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste

  • Vinegar 2 teaspoons


Step 1

Whisk yogurt and turmeric powder together. Add the mutton cubes and marinate for two hours in the refrigerator. Chop one onion and slice the other. Heat one and half tablespoons oil over medium heat in a heavy bottomed pan and sauté sliced onion until brown.

Step 2

Drain and keep aside.Add the remaining oil to the pan and sauté chopped onions until soft. Add crushed ginger and garlic and sauté for one minute

Step 3

Add coriander powder, cinnamon powder, clove powder, black pepper powder and red chilli powder. Sauté for one minute over low heat.

Step 4

Add two tablespoons of water and sauté till dry.Add desiccated coconut sauté for two minutes over low heat.

Step 5

Add meat and increase the heat. Stir and fry the meat for five minutes or until it changes colour. Add two cups of warm water and bring it to a boil.

Step 6

Cover and simmer for thirty minutes.Add fried onions and salt. Further simmer for thirty minutes or until the meat is tender.Stir in vinegar, remove from heat, serve hot.
