Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Matar Wale Chawal Recipe

  • Green peas (matar) 1 cup

  • Basmati rice soaked for 30 minutes and drained 1 1/2 cups

  • Ghee 2 tablespoons

  • Black peppercorns 5-6

  • Green cardamoms 2

  • Cloves 2

  • Bay leaves 2

  • Cumin seeds 1 1/2 teaspoons

  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Heat ghee in a deep non-stick pan, add black peppercorns, green cardamoms, cloves, bay leaves, cumin seeds, mix and saute till fragrant.

Step 2

Add rice and mix well. Add salt and 3 cups water, mix well and let the mixture come to a boil.

Step 3

Add green peas, mix well, cover and cook till rice is completely done.

Step 4

Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
