It is a fact that Dals and Kadhis are comfort foods and they are a good source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamins B and iron. Dals, especially are a major source of dietary fibre and proteins. Kadhis are a blend of yogurt and herbs which assist in efficient digestion. Every region has its locally grown herbs and spices as the key ingredients, thus a variety of kadhis are relished across the length and breadth of Indian subcontinent.

Ingredients for Doodhi Chana ni Dal - SK Khazana Recipe

  • Bottle gourd (lauki/doodhi) peeled and cut into medium cubes 1 medium

  • Split Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked for 30 minutes 1/2 cup

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon

  • Green chillies finely chopped 2-3

  • Curry leaves 10-12

  • Tomato finely chopped 1 large

  • Fresh tomato puree 3/4 cup

  • Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Coriander powder 3/4 teaspoon

  • Cumin powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Kitchen king masala 1/2 teaspoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander leaves 1 1/2 tablespoons

  • Fresh coriander sprigs

Method

Step 1

Put chana dal and bottle gourd into a pressure cooker, add 1½ cups water, cover the cooker and cook under pressure till 3-4 whistles are released.

Step 2

Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add asafoetida green chillies and curry leaves, mix well and saute for 1 minute. Add tomato and mix well. Add tomato puree and mix well. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, Kitchen King masala and salt and mix well. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.

Step 3

Add Bengal gram and bottle gourd and mix well. Add coriander leaves and mix well. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes

Step 4

Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprigs and serve hot.
